Vivir: Eyes Wide Open

It all began with an idea around student engagement and access to study abroad opportunities.

University of Arizona staff members Socorro Carrizosa and Dan Xayaphanh, along with professor Richard Ruiz, collaborated with UA Study Abroad to launch Vivir México, a new study abroad program which has come to a close.

Vivir: Active Engagement Abroad

At the UA, several programs offered through Study Abroad have a strong community service component.

 

Among them is a study abroad program in Antigua, Guatemala at the Center for Mesoamerican Research. There, in addition to learning an indigenous language and about the history of revolutions in Central America, students are able to establish their own volunteership or internship, for which they earn UA credit.

Vivir: Wildcats in Mexico

July 3, 2013, UANEWS, The University of Arizona

University of Arizona staff members Socorro Carrizosa and Dan Xayaphanh, along with professor Richard Ruiz, collaborated with UA Study Abroad to launch Vivir México. Students in program earn six credits while traveling to Mexico City and Guanajuato, learning about sociopolitical issues in the country.

 

Another priority was to ensure that students not only gain study abroad experience, but experience working directly with local community members.

Socorro Carrizosa and Dan Xayaphanh, program directors for UA Chicano/Hispano Student Affairs and Asian Pacific American Student Affairs, respectively, launched the Vivir México study abroad program to offer students with financial need a chance to study abroad. The team was able to land private funding to support students in their travels.

I’ll never forget how accomplished I felt after reaching the top of the pyramids in Teotihuacán. As a child of Mexican immigrants, I had made it one of my life’s goals to visit my mother’s homeland. Years later as a college student, I received the opportunity to study abroad in Mexico through the University of Arizona Cultural Center’s “Vivir México” study abroad program.
